QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Questions about Ahem?

About Ahem, its approach, and what you can try here.

What is Ahem?

Ahem is a language-learning app built around what you want to say. Practice useful phrases, explore your interests, and take part in story conversations where you choose how to respond.

What do you mean by immersive practice?

You take part in a scene: there is a setting, a character to talk to, and something to respond to. You might explain a preference, ask a question, or suggest a different plan.

How is an interactive story different from reading a story?

You decide what to say, and the character responds to your reply. Instead of just following the story, you help shape the conversation.

Why let me choose what to practice?

What you want to say depends on your interests and your life. Choosing a phrase or situation gives you a reason to practice it. Ahem adds a scene and someone to respond to.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to learn?

No. Start with a thought from your day, a conversation you expect to have, or something you enjoy. You can also try the website demo, which chooses a scene for you.

What if I don’t know how to reply?

In the website demo, open “Expressions to try” for a few useful phrases, or show the translations and pronunciation guides. Try a short reply, or ask the character to explain. You do not need to write a perfect sentence to continue.

Do I have to use the suggested expressions?

No. The suggested expressions are there to help, but you can reply in your own words. Focus on what you want to communicate.

Is the goal to learn new words or practice words I already know?

Both can be useful. A scene can introduce an expression in context and give you opportunities to use familiar language. Repeated encounters are opportunities for practice; seeing a word once does not mean you have learned it completely.

Can Ahem replace real conversations or a teacher?

Ahem is a place to practice alongside lessons and real conversations. Teachers and other speakers bring cultural knowledge, feedback, different voices, and responses that an AI simulation cannot fully reproduce.

Is the approach scientifically proven?

Research supports ingredients used in the design, including learner choice, opportunities to produce language, retrieval, and practice over time. That is different from having measured the effectiveness of Ahem itself. Our approach page explains the reasoning and links to the research.

What can I do in the website demo?

Choose a language and level, then start a story. The demo picks a setting and character from Ahem’s story library and generates a fresh opening. Type your own replies to continue the conversation.

Do I need an account?

You do not need an account for the website demo. Each scene allows up to six replies. There are also limits on how many scenes you can start in an hour.

Where is my demo progress kept?

Your scene is held temporarily on the demo server for up to 30 minutes. Your browser tab keeps the information needed to reopen it or retry an unfinished reply. Replies are sent to the AI provider, but they are not saved to an Ahem app account. To remove the active scene, choose “Change setup,” then “Clear scene.” See Website privacy for details about provider records.

Will my practice appear in the app?

No. The website demo does not connect to your app account or transfer your conversations.

Which languages can I try?

You can choose English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Korean, Simplified Chinese, German, or Vietnamese. Select the language you speak and the one you want to practice separately. Story availability depends on the language you choose.

Can AI make mistakes?

Yes. Generated dialogue and explanations can contain mistakes. Use the experience as practice and check language that matters with a reliable source or knowledgeable speaker.

Where can I ask questions or suggest a situation?

The Ahem community on Reddit is a place to ask questions, suggest conversations, share feedback, and follow improvements.
